What are you looking at?
In my book Take the Cannoli, Sarah Vowell explains new york as your looking at it, and she says, " to your left is the world trade center, the Empire State building, and all the other big shot towers bable assembled in a united front of taunting: what are you looking at."
when you look at a painting, building, person, etc... what do you look at? you can describe what you look for, what do you look at specifically, how do you look at it? etc etc...
ok... I put this picture, and I could not delete it :( so just pretend this is New York :/

  1. When I look at a building or city the only thought that's going through my mind is 'opportunity' For example. Chicago is flourishing with opportunities waiting to be taken advantage of. So I guess the way I look at it is in a business point of view? Yeah that.

But not if I was looking at say, a field of wild flowers. I would think of freedom. Only because it's open with air. Ya get what i'm sayin'?

  2. What am I looking at? Chicago's public library from my dorm bedroom. It's so massive it takes up my whole entire view. Not to mention the sidewalks by it are torn apart due to construction. Then you have your jaywalkers running across the street trying to beat the light, and not getting hit by some random car.

  4. Chicago to me is the best place to live. There are a lot of connections and jobs. you could be on a train and network with someone you didn't know. they could be a CEO of this big company. And you could be that person that they were looking for!

when i look at the city of Chicago, i see business, fast paste, lots of people, and home!
I love down town! the big open city! The place of opportunities.

Chicago to me is Home!!! :) ;) <3

  5. BUILDINGS- when I first see a building, My first thought is "wow that's big( for some of them)some buldings houses etc.. have diffrent ways of looking at them like a bulding of course i would think deeper as to whats in it, how many people work there or just simple things like "who the hell climbed that far just to clean those windows. ha-ha.:)) PEOPLE- Like we we're talking about yesterday I always assume something based off what they are wearing and how they present themselves to me, I don't think i Judge in bad ways i "JUST DO IT" like the NIKE BRAND ha-ha> lol,

  6. When i look at a painting i would usually become more involved or focused with the back ground of the painting. I figure that the back ground determines the mood. It isn't always necessarily true the character in the center whose the center of attention.

  7. I first want to say that i am an artist, not to brag but I do really like to draw. When I am looking at something, anything, like for example a piece of artwork, I like to look at all the different colors used to create a color in the picture. When I saw this quote I immediately loved it. I stayed on that page and had to think about it. I personally like to break things down to a simpler form, figure out how i can create it in a different way, so i just wanted to see how the other people in my class look at things.

  8. What I look for in a picture is the details of it. The details show the effort from the artist or photographer had made. The emotion, artwork, photo, and the colors are the details I look for. They show me the inspiration that I can draw the things that I can do.

If I were to look at a photo of Chicago skycrapers. I would think, "That's a nice building." or "Nice photo." I used to take a lot of photos and I worry about the angle and how it would look because details matter to a lot of people.

  10. When i look at this picture i see history. If you look at all the buildings it shows how far we have come. The city is always growing and changing but some original buildings still stand. It shows that after everything this city has been through were still strong. When I see the lights i just think of all the night life and all the amazing stuff to do. It shows why we are one of the main cities in the world.

  11. Whenever I look at something I look beyond the appearance, i look for a story or history;a meaning. For example, the picture of Chicago I see a history or years and time built into the city. I see hundreds of people who have gone in and out of the city, people who love or hate the city. I see home and comfort...this list can go on. Whatever the case maybe for a painting, building, a person, judging should be out of the question.Everyone views differntly, but I think there should be more time and consideration into what their looking at. There is a story and a purpose behind everything, it just takes time to know the meaning.

  12. People:
When I first meet a person, I try to go beyond the first impression. Like what we were talking about yesterday, "Preconception is Reality"- not everything that we see in a person might be true. It's the way they approach you, how they speak, their appearance, etc.
We might be so quick to judge, but in the end we sometimes get proved wrong.

  13. When I look at a person for the first time I try to see what we have in common. Then I think about what there interest maybe.Looking at a person I specifically look at there personality. To me its not about the way their dress. But when looking at a painting I always try and think about an event that happened to me in the past.

*When i notice a dark background the attitude of the painting is may to express gloominess, sadness, dullness and violent. When i notice a very colorful background i feel as if someones confused, crazy, extremely hyper. But when i notice a more of a bright back ground the painting is trying to show the happiness, including being full of energy!

  15. Part 2
when I talk about breaking down to a simpler form, an example is when I listen to music I like to not just listen to it as a whole but break it down instrument by instrument and figure out each rythem thats being played and how it all fits together.

  16. when i see people there's more to them than what they have on or the way they talk, my way of judging a person is mainly who are you? I dont exactly go "oh he's on drugs" but i can tell by the way they speak or present themselves. I HOPE THIS WAS MORE CLEAR

  17. What I meant about angles is that they give away a certain feeling to it. Like, when you're up close to a building, you would either want to make it seem like a big tall building or want to get far away from the building and show the details around the house and not only just the house. The details shows off the feelings about the picture. Like a peaceful building or a big working building. Some pictures can be deceitful but can't really hate on being tricked since you liked the details that the picture show.

  18. one day i was on my way down town with one of my friends just hanging out. I was sitting next to a lady that looked as if she was on her way to something big. So i simply spoke to her, saying hi. And she said hello and proceeded a conversation, asking me how was my day. I don't know really how we got on the conversation of dance but she ended up owning a dance company and told me she would come see me dance. After she seen me she told me i wouldn't have to try out she would just put me on the team!!! It was amazing!!! <3 <3 <3

  19. What am I looking at? Chicago's public library from my dorm bedroom. It's so massive it takes up my whole entire view. It's weird how many people you see coming in and out the building. Back home our library's are pretty much abandon with tumbleweeds blowing across.I find it interesting that people value this library for it's resources. I've never stepped font in any library's back home, but I would be willing to check this one out to see what's the hype about. Who knows I may sign up for my first library card.

  20. When I meet people I do have a perception of them. For example when I see a man in a suite I assume hes a professional businessmen. Or when I see a girl wearing all black with dark make up. I assume shes a mean person. But I don't treat them that way I always wait until I get to know them

  21. when i say look at all the buildings to see how far we have come i mean think of the Chicago fire. Pretty much the whole city was ruined but we still have key landmarks that survived. By making a new building that shows improvement and progress. We are always improving the city but yet we still have main pieces of architecture and landmarks that will always stand.

  22. So to clarify a bit more as too why i think of business when i see a building is because they remind me of success. Possibly because since we were kids education and prosperity were in engraved in our minds. The architecture for example took tons of planning to make it work. Another factor is the people inside the building. I think of them having a good education and being successful of course. Compared to seeing someone working at a local McDonald's (i don't mean to offend anyone)
