High Schools to go CLEAR?

We have all heard the stories, gave our opinions but what can be done? Violence and suicides in high schools have increased much since 2008. More and more school districts are requiring their students to carry see-through backpacks or clear backpacks to decrease Violence and suicides, but mainly just to be aware and cautious.

Do you Think the Violence and such can be decreased by requiring students to carry clear backpacks or do you think its invading a students privacy? Do you think high schools should take on this also? why or why not?

  1. I personally don't think that having a clear book bag is going to decrease violence. I mean, if you think about it...someone who is planning on doing something tragic in a school setting probably is very smart. (not trying to sound crazy here) and i'm sure that the whole book bag thing isn't going to get in his/her way of doing whatever mischievous act they want to perform.

  3. I really don't think that this is going to help anything. If someone wants to like do something i dont think that a clear back pack would do anything. If you bring drugs to school you can stash it pretty easily. The suicide thing I think is more like bullying so i dont get what that has to do with a backpack. If schools make kids wear the clear backpacks i think theyll figure out another way to bring the stuff they want, or some just dont care if they get caught. Or theyll just wait till they get out and do something for break they can stash it they dont need to bring it in the school. If someone really wanted to do something they would do it no matter what.

  4. Yes its actually true that a clear book bag can stop the chaotic things that happen in school. At CMAB we were required to have a clear book-bag since sophomore year. We had reports of drugs, guns,BB guns,Knives,Razors ever since we got the clear bags. No telling what was on peoples minds! The security at the front doors aren't a hundred percent sure to catch everything that's why they need the aid of clear bags. Since the experiment at my high school it seemed to really make a difference with the violence.

  5. I went to Thomas Kelly High School, and we did have clear backpacks. When the rule was given on orientation that we had to wear them, people freaked out. We thought they were going to invade our privacy by everyone looking at what we carried. In my own opinion, in a way i did have a problem with it, but the again i didn't. Being a girl, at times you have to carry stuff you don't want people to see. So, it was easy for me to go out and buy a little bag to put inside my backpack.
I went to a Chicago Public School, and around our area, the public schools also carried that rule. With that being said, one of the reason why i found it pointless for my school to have them, was because we also had a metal detector.

Why carry clear book bags, if they have to check us before we even walk inside the building? So, no, I do not think it would decrease violence.

  6. I really don't think having a clear backpack could really do much.Student's always find new way to get around with sneaking things into schools. Not to mention this is invading others privacy. Also there are many ways a student can be violent, without bring a weapon to school. Pen, chairs, books etc. can be used ad weapons. So are they going to tell you not to bring those? No. I do have a question, what does clear backpacks and suicide rate have to deal with each other?

  7. I don't think clear backpacks would help much to decrease school violence. It wouldn't matter if it is an invasion of privacy since there are kids that bring knives, guns, drugs, and bombs to school. It's only a possibility for them to bring some sort of weapon to school. I never had a clear backpack during my school years because I wouldn't bring a weapon to school. I would just bring my phone and notebooks and pencils. People choose to fight on school grounds and ignore the rules that was given to them. Some are afraid of the consequences after getting caught for fighting on school grounds. Violence can be prevented with peace-talks or not getting into it.

  8. I BELIEVE ITS A GOOD IDEA FOR CHILDREN TO CARRY AROUND CLEAR BOOK BAGS. WHEN I WAS IN GAMMER SCHOOL IT REALLY HELPED THE FIGHTING AND WEAPON USAGE GO DOWN. i JUST BELIEVE THAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER TO JUST GET MEADOW DETECTORS IN THE SCHOOL. NOT ONLY WOULD THAT HELP THE CHILDREN HAVE PRIVACY BUT IT WOULD SENCE ALL OF THE THINGS THAT THEY COULD HIDE.

  9. I don't see the importance of a clear backpack. I feel like it should be a choice to have a clear backpack. like show that you can have one because i'm hearing about it just now and i would love to have one, the only reason I don't have one is because I was never introduced the idea of being able to bring a clear backpack to school.

There really is not much privacy to a school backpack. I mean what exactly are kids in elementary school and middle school bringing. I highly doubt elementary kids are bring a gun or a simple pack of smokes to school! honestly I think that it should be identified as something you can use, and some kids will want it and have it.

  10. I APPROVE!!!! Having clear would let teachers be more aware of whats being brought in the classrooms, going off what MIGUEL said. A person who wants to cause danger to a classroom can be observed by authority when they first come inside of the school and it can be prevented. some criminals are not smart, i witnessed a knife being brought in a school when i was int he sixth grade while wearing a clear backpack, so she wasn't smart. honestly its a great idea to have them MIGUELLLLL

  11. I think the clear book bags is a good idea because it will benefit the students and staff. The students will feel safer while at school knowing harmful objects wont be in the school. While the staff will have less behavior problems. People wouldn't have to get suspended for having there cellphone, i pods, etc. I think every school should start doing it.

  13. Yea Stacia thats true i just wish they had a better design or look to them they end up being so ugly. With me having to wear a military uniform everyday, and a clear book bag everyone looked the exact same. The only thing that made us feel different was our freedom or different brands of backpacks but now they everyone has to wear the exact thing it becomes very depressing.

  14. jodeci i totally agree. if something is gonna happen they'll find a way to make it happen. You can use everyday tools as weapons. It just depends on the person really

  15. I agree with Amanda and Mike and Dominick about the clear bookbags. I wouldn't see much point to them either. They won't stop the students from bringing whatever they wanted to bring in. I do not agree with Miguel about smart criminals. @Miguel: If you were to say insane yet really crazy criminals. I would've agreed.

  16. I do not exactly agree with Miguel, that the person planning on doing something violent is going to be very smart. The past year in my neighborhood people have been dropping like flies and getting hurt. literally! but not everyone has been to smart about it.

  19. In response to Brandon's answer. i believe its just about wear your from. At my high school we didn't wear back packs but when someone that went to my school gets shot or something, all out of nowhere they bring out meadow detectors for a day! my security guards only guarded fights and they were mostly fat so that's if they made it on the third floor to catch it before someone gets killed. So if it helped your school then i believe it could of helped mine.

  20. JODECI COLEMAN--- you asked what does suicide rate and clear backpacks have to do with eachother?? I WILL TELL YOU. when i asked that, i was referring to "in the high schools" not at home, I watch the news alot and i always hear stories about students bringing dangerous things to school to harm themselves. Actually when i lived in Mississippi a young man was found dead in the bathroom at a public high school with ropes and needles, sooo where do you think he walked in the school with them NO he brought them in his back pack!! not to say that one case means clear backpacks should be APPROVED but come on now, it would change alot of stuff!!!!

  21. Brandon I would have to disagree with you. I don't feel the clear backpack would stop anything. You can only see what's on the top surface of the backpack. Who's to say I wouldn't have a weapon in between my books? Or what if I took out the time to cut the pages out of my history book to place my switch blade in it?
Let's say it's winter time and I decide to put my 9mm gun in the inside of my cost? You can't see it so what is the clear backpack protecting you from? Or what if the school makes you wear the clear backpacks, but the school doesn't have it in their budget to hire on security and buy meadow detectors?

  22. In response to Mike and that comment, when you said "Having clear would let teachers be more aware of whats being brought in the classrooms" you have to think that not every teacher is going to be at the door searching through your backpack to see what's being brought inside on a daily basis. My school had metal detectors, so the whole backpack searching wasn't necessary. Also, your point when you mentioned the knife thing, that is understandable. Being a girl at my school and passing through metal detectors and if you beeped, it wasn't that big of a deal. Unlike the guys, security judged them a lot. They would send them back countless times until they stopped beeping. So, they did cut girls slack sometimes. I'm not saying it's a good thing, because like that it is easy for girls to bring in things.

  23. Dominick i'm glad to hear that you're so moved by these book bags. I do understand your comment on how exactly would a child need privacy in their book bag. I guess maybe because me and you were in "burb" school? I don't know. Maybe my outlook on this would be different if i attended a CPS.

  24. MARYLIN I DISAGREE BECAUSE FROM YOU GOING TO THOSE SCHOOLS CAN U HONESTLY SAY THAT IT DIDN'T HELP AT ALL. YOU SAID THAT IT WAS EASY TO JUST BUY A BAG TO PUT INSIDE YOUR CLEAR BOOK BAG. i THINK THEM STILL CHECKING THE STUDENTS WAS A GOOD IDEA.I DONT THINK ITS ABOUT INVADING PRIVACY BUT TRYING TO PROTECT THE STUDENTS.

  25. I can see the point of clear backpacks decreasing violence but decreasing suicide? I dont think so. a clear backpack cannot stop bullying, because bullying is defined in many ways besides physically. also it cannot stop the person of what they think, thats make them want to commit suicide. the one thing that I can truely reside by is that clear backpacks will only last for a certain point until highschoolers find a different way to sneak in drugs, weapons, or whatever that causes the violence.
